Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Thursday (January 1, 2025) wrote to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw expressing concern over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on social media platforms to post objectionable pictures of women using fake accounts.
She said such practices constituted a serious violation of women’s privacy and urged the center to take urgent measures to protect their rights. “Features like Grok need to put in place guardrails so that they don’t violate women’s dignity. Big tech firms need to shoulder the burden,” Ms Chaturvedi said.
In the letter, Ms Chaturvedi highlighted “a new trend that has emerged on social media”, particularly X, through the misuse of its AI Grok feature, where men “use fake accounts to post photos of women and insert prompts into Grok to minimize their clothing and sexualize them”.
“It is not limited to sharing photos through fake accounts but also targets women who post their own photos. This is an unacceptable and gross misuse of the AI feature,” she said.
She further added: “Worse, Grok enables this behavior by complying with such demands. This is a violation of women’s right to privacy and unauthorized use of their photos, which is not only unethical, but also criminal.”
Ms. Chaturvedi further urged the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology to take decisive action against social media platform X and introduce safeguards in AI-driven tools to ensure the safety of women online.
In the letter, Ms. Chaturvedi said that India cannot remain a bystander while women’s dignity is publicly and digitally violated under the guise of creativity and innovation. She highlighted growing concerns about similar unchecked patterns across major technology platforms, stressing that such practices constitute criminal behavior.
“Our country cannot condone the public and digital violation of women’s dignity with zero consequences under the guise of creativity and innovation that ignores such challenges. We see similar patterns emerging on other major technology platforms that are absolutely unchecked. As a nation, we must make it a priority to ensure that women are not victims of such blatantly criminal practices,” and further push them out of the letters they read and remain silent.
She stressed the need for urgent intervention and said the government must ensure that women are not silenced or pushed out of digital spaces.
Ms. Chaturvedi added that while India welcomes artificial intelligence and its benefits, it will not tolerate the spread of degrading content targeting women, and expressed hope that the ministry will address the issue with major technology companies.
She condemned the men who run these fake accounts. “I wish men who indulge in such behavior would be better educated in their homes and schools so they don’t become such sick perverts when they grow up,” she said.
