Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed confidence that the Governor still has enough time to clear the nomination of Minister Mohammad Azharuddin to the Telangana Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota.
In an informal chat with reporters on Friday, the chief minister hinted that the government would soon meet new governor Shiv Pratap Shukla to discuss and expedite the pending nominations.
He noted that the Supreme Court had recently observed that it had no objection on the matter and that the state government could take up the matter with the governor. In case of any legal hurdle, the government could approach the High Court.
Mr Azharuddin, who was sworn in as Minority Welfare Minister on October 31, 2025, is constitutionally required to be elected to the Legislative Assembly or Legislative Council by April 30, 2026 to continue in the Cabinet.
The Telangana Cabinet has recommended the names of Mr. Azharuddin and M. Kodandaram for nomination to the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota on 30 August 2025. However, the file is still awaiting the approval of the Governor as on 20 March.
