Republican vs. Democrat: Dispute over Trump’s role in Iran war turns dangerous, one shot at Ohio dog park | Today’s news
A political dispute over US President Donald Trump has turned violent at a dog park in Ohio. It happened in Bainbridge Township when an argument broke out between two men, both of whom had guns in their cars, according to a report from The New York Times. This all took place while the two men were out with their pet dogs at the dog park.
The incident began with a conversation about the president’s decision and resulted in criminal proceedings against both men. One of them is now allegedly facing prison.

According to The New York Times, the altercation lasted about 20 minutes.
The incident dates back to April, when David Mattai, 55, arrived at the dog park with his spaniel Bob. Mattai, who worked as a forklift mechanic, reportedly had a week off work. He is believed to have ended up in the dog park after trying to take his dog on a hiking trail but failing. As a result, Mattai drove to a park in Bainbridge Township, Northeast Ohio.
At the park, Mattai met Emmanuel Mathews. Mathews, 80, was a retired meat distributor who was said to be a regular at the dog park with his corgi, Frankie. Mathews, alias Mike, was believed to be sitting at a picnic table with a copy of The Wall Street Journal headlined: “Trump grapples with fear of war,” the report added.
Witness to testify
In the midst of it all, Jamie Jedlinsky, 70, who was at the park with his pit mix, Willow, unwittingly witnessed the confrontation.
The New York Times reported that Jedlinsky became somewhat friendly with Mathews over the years. Noticing the newspaper, he pointed to a headline about the Iran war and remarked, “That sucks, no.”
However, Mathews disagreed. As a Trump supporter, Mathews reportedly began defending the president’s decision. Mattai, who had arrived shortly before the exchange, listened to their conversation.
Mattai reportedly considered himself a democratic socialist and had a collection of political stickers that read “Trump is a criminal” and “Hicks don’t mess with politics.”
In the largely Republican Northeast Ohio area where he lived, he saw it as his moral duty to “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” reported The New York Times.
How it turned into a shooting
The political disagreements between the two men subsequently turned into an argument and escalated into shouting matches. Both men had firearms in their cars and a simple confrontation turned into a criminal matter.
Citing details of the confrontation through interviews, recordings and body camera footage, the report said both men face the possibility of jail time.
Jedlinskij is likely to testify as a key witness in the case in both cases. The report described him as someone who generally avoided discussing politics, as advised by his mother.
Mattai reportedly struggled with alcoholism in his life and later said he had been drinking on the day of the incident.
According to cleveland19, Emmanuel John Matthews shot David Mattai in the back as he tried to leave the dog park.

The prosecution has pleaded not guilty
The matter later went to Chardon Municipal Court, where Matthews pleaded not guilty and posted bail on April 22, according to the news outlet.
The victim is said to have undergone multiple surgeries following the shooting.
“He (Mattai) saw the man’s gun. He didn’t reach for his. He had the door open and he was trying to find Bob when the man shot him in the back. At that point he actually fell, but he reached inside and grabbed the gun and fired back at the man’s car,” said Sally Mattai, the victim’s wife.
The defense attorney reportedly argued that Matthews was in danger and acted in self-defense.
Bainbridge Township Clerk Friedrich Kaufmann testified at trial.
The case was later transferred to Geauga County Common Pleas Court.
