RCB back-to-back titles built on the foundations created by the IPL mega-auctions
For eighteen long years, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has pursued a singular, elusive dream. During that time they were famously heavy, brilliant in flashes but notoriously fragile under pressure. They had the charm, the screaming fan base and the individual superstars, but they lacked the basic grit needed to conquer the league. Yet in just twelve months they have completely rewritten their legacy. They are riding high as back-to-back IPL champions and have finally shed their tag of perpetual underdogs.
While the celebratory fireworks continue to settle over the skies of Ahmedabad, the true story of this budding cricketing dynasty has not been written on the boundary ropes. It was ecreated in the boardroom during the IPL mega auction. By prioritizing brutal squad depth over a glamorous, brittle starting eleven, the RCB management has built a bulletproof machine capable of surviving the grueling marathon of the modern IPL.

“QUALITY REPLACEMENT” STRATEGY
A tournament as long and demanding as the IPL inevitably tests the structural integrity of a franchise. Injuries, fluctuating form, international commitments and sudden player departures usually derail title fees. For RCB of old, losing a key player to injury meant hitting the panic button and watching the entire campaign quickly unfold. For the modern RCB, however, it simply meant pulling another lever.
Speaking on JioHotstar after their historic crown defense, former captain Dinesh Karthik captured this philosophical shift perfectly:
“Like you said, Irfan, a lot of planning goes into it. Having a good starting eleven or eleven is one thing, but in a tournament this long, you know there are going to be injuries, players are going to be late, or even personal problems at times. You have to be prepared for all those situations.”
“We’re trying our best. We’ve had really good back-ups across the skill-set. When Salt went out, Bethell came in. When Bethell got injured, another player came in. When Josh Hazlewood wasn’t there, we had Duffy, who was the No. 1 bowler in the world. We had good replacements.”
PROPOSAL OF AN UNDETERMINED DEPARTMENT
The sheer luxury of tactical options available to skipper Rajat Patidar during these two Championship seasons is a testament to the master class by Andy Flower and Mo Bobat. The squad composition stands out as an absolute marvel of modern cricket scouting and squad building.
At the top of the order were Virat Kohli and Phil Salt as an explosive opening combination that terrorized the bowling attacks. Still, the team never had to sweat over form or availability, knowing they had the all-rounder Jacob Bethell and Venkatesh Iyer patiently waiting in the wings as the primary secondary option.
Further down the order, Devdutt Padikkal and Rajat Patidar were the designated anchors and enforcers for positions 3 and 4. If the match situation called for tactical pivoting, Krunal Pandya proved more than capable of stepping in and anchoring or accelerating alongside Bethell and Iyer. The management even decided to field Jitesh Sharma to face the early wickets and keep the power-play score high.
When it came to the death overs, Tim David and Romario Shepherd provided raw, muscular power as the main finishers, complemented beautifully by Jitesh Sharma and Swapnil Singh on the bench. Swapnil also doubled up as an invaluable extra spin option, building on his highly impressive performances from previous seasons.
The bowling unit was equally relentless and balanced. While Josh Hazlewood remained the crown jewel of the pace battery, RCB casually lined up New Zealander Jacob Duffy, who recently topped the T20I rankings as the world’s number one bowler. They were partnered by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose veteran presence and swing were vital to the team’s fortunes. The spin department has relied heavily on street smarts Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya, with Swapnil providing a third reliable spin-spin option to squeeze the opposition lineups.
UNENGAGED HEROES
The true mark of a mega-auction success story is not just buying international stars; it is a careful search for home-grown talent and providing absolute structural clarity. Apart from their established international stars, RCB possessed an untapped goldmine of unlimited resources in a roster of all-rounders and bowlers that included Mangesh Yadav and Abhinandan Singh.
But the ultimate poster child of this revolutionary system was Rasikh Salam Dar. After sitting on the sidelines without playing a single game in the previous season, Rasikh has been thrown in at the deep end this year. Instead of drowning under the weight of expectations, he turned into RCB’s ultimate defensive weapon, consistently delivering tough, high-pressure raids.
As Karthik noted, this seamless, plug-and-play success is entirely due to the culture created behind the scenes:
“Rasikh Salam didn’t win a game for us last year. But this season, the way he performed under pressure, kept throwing over tough hurdles and rising to the challenge was outstanding. He’s got character.”
“A lot of that comes from the way we train and the clarity of roles that Andy Flower and Mo Bobat have given the players. Everyone knows exactly what they have to do when they walk into the RCB dressing room and that stands us in good stead.”
VERDICT
When asked about the mechanism that made this back-to-back title possible, Karthik smiled. “I don’t think they would mind. Ideally, we probably wouldn’t want a mega auction, but let’s leave that discussion for another day.”
They may not want another mega-auction to tear apart this specific group, but RCB have officially cracked the tournament’s toughest code. By replacing the old culture of individual reliance with an army of high-quality reserves and absolute tactical clarity, RCB have not only won back-to-back titles. They built an empire.
