Rare chest cyst removed without open surgery

Doctors at Pinnacle Hospitals treated a mediastinal duplication cyst using a minimally invasive endoscopic technique, avoiding the need for conventional open chest surgery.

The procedure was performed by an expert medical gastroenterologist, Dr. Sravan Kumar Korrapati in a patient suffering from severe dysphagia due to an 8 cm cyst compressing the esophagus. According to the hospital, such cysts are generally treated with open chest surgery because of their location in the mediastinum, which contains vital organs and large blood vessels.

The medical team accessed the cyst through the esophagus using therapeutic endoscopy and created an internal drainage route, eliminating the need for external incisions, the hospital said. The patient recovered and was discharged within 48 hours.

Dr. Kumar said advances in therapeutic endoscopy are enabling effective treatment with minimal disruption to patients. The hospital said this approach could reduce the trauma of the procedure, post-operative pain and recovery time compared to conventional surgery.
