PV Sindhu wins inaugural Indonesia Open, faces potential clash with An Se-young
India’s PV Sindhu got off to a winning start to her Indonesian Open campaign by overcoming Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight games to book a place in the round of 16 on Tuesday. The former world champion won 25-23, 21-16 in a contest that tested her composure despite the scoreline suggesting a comfortable victory.
Sindhu appeared to be firmly in control of the opening game and looked set to close it out with ease before a delaying restart penalty allowed Busanan to get back into the match. The Thai shuttler capitalized on the momentum shift to erase Sindhu’s advantage, forcing a thrilling finish.
However, whenever Busanan threatened to gain a foothold, Sindhu responded with timely winners and more consistency from the baseline. The Indian eventually struggled for control in the opener before carrying that momentum into the second game to seal the match and set up a potentially daunting clash against world number one An Se-young, who beat her in the Singapore Open quarter-finals last week.
