Dharwad, which was in the news for mega students’ protest against the delayed recruitment process in various departments – and now for the demand for a separate municipal corporation – is likely to witness another ‘satyagraha’ if the government does not initiate the recruitment process.

Speaking at a press conference in Dharwad on Monday (June 1), activist and president of the Dharwad High Court Bar Association, BD Hiremath said that if the government does not set a time for discussions to start the recruitment process as demanded by the job seekers, they will be forced to start a “satyagraha for truth and justice” from June.

Mr. Hiremath said the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad and the Commissioner of Police should take the responsibility of scheduling a meeting with the government and said they would wait till June 8, after which the “satjagraha” would be launched whether the police allowed it or not.

He said though the state government has decided to do the recruitment, the process has not yet started as the final notification has not yet been issued. As a result, the unemployed youth became agitated. Uttara Karnataka Vikas Vedike in association with AKSA (Akhila Karnataka Students’ Association) jointly organized the protest, he said.

Mr Hiremath said the protest was initially planned for Wednesday (June 3) but was called off because the police refused permission. He said that while the police say they have been harmed by the behavior of the protesting students, youths have also been harmed due to the inordinate delay in recruitment.

With the new chief minister scheduled to take oath on Wednesday (June 3), the administration should arrange a meeting with the chief secretary and the chief minister on the matter, he said, adding that “the onus is on the deputy commissioner and the police commissioner to facilitate the dialogue”.

Mr. Hiremath also clarified that leaders from all the 31 districts should be involved in the discussion on the issue.

Police denied AKSA permission to hold the agitation on Wednesday (June 3), citing violations of rules and conditions laid down during earlier protests and law and order concerns.

Commissioner of Police N. Shashikumar told reporters that they had already informed Mr. Hiremath about the relevant details. He said the public should not be misled by the contradictory statements and hoped AKSA would work with them on the issue.
