Putin briefs Trump on Iran’s position on peace deal, Kremlin informs; what did Tehran propose? | Today’s news

Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed Iran’s position on a possible solution to the US-Iran conflict to US President Donald Trump, the Kremlin said on Saturday (October 10th), as diplomatic efforts to end the war remain on hold.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin conveyed Tehran’s views during a phone call with Trump on Friday in coordination with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Reuters reported, citing Russia’s Interfax news agency.

“In coordination with the Iranian president, Putin conveyed to Trump the opinion of the Iranian side on a possible solution to the conflict,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin did not release details of Iran’s position or say how Trump reacted to the news. She did not provide any further information on the possible terms of the settlement.

Putin offers to help broker a peace deal between the US and Iran

Putin’s latest appearance comes amid a long diplomatic impasse over the conflict that began with the US-Israeli attacks on Iran in February.

Earlier this week, Putin met with Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a summit in Turkmenistan. During the meeting, the Russian leader expressed Moscow’s interest in helping broker peace and hinted at Russia’s possible diplomatic role in trying to end hostilities.

But it remains unclear whether Putin’s communication with Trump will lead to a resumption of talks or a breakthrough in the stalled peace process.

Why have US-Iran peace talks stalled?

Efforts to end the conflict have been at an impasse since the summer, despite an earlier understanding between Washington and Tehran.

In June, the United States and Iran agreed to a memorandum of understanding that outlined a framework for ending the conflict. However, Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz prompted a resumption of US military operations, undermining diplomatic efforts.

Recent indirect talks between Washington and Tehran, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, have produced no breakthrough.
