IPL 2026: Shubman Gill hits back at critics – ‘I don’t need to prove my worth’ “I know we will play Chinnaswamy on May 31 and lift the cup. It’s not just a feeling, I know it. It will happen,” said Shashank.“It’s confidence and team belief. Everyone’s on the same page. There’s confidence in everyone.”PBKS had an impressive campaign in 2025, finishing top of the league stage with nine wins from 14 matches before defeating Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to book their place in the final.Looking ahead, Shashank stressed the importance of staying grounded rather than dwelling on last season’s success.“We will take it game by game because the ultimate goal is to win the trophy.”“If we continue to think that we reached the final last year, there will be a lot of pressure on us. So our immediate focus is to prepare for our first game against GT, then against CSK and KKR,” he said during the ‘JioStar Press Room’.Led by Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting, the franchise has retained 21 players from last season and maintains a stable core.“Playing the final and winning is the ultimate goal. But we have to focus on every game, correct our mistakes that will be easier. We are very motivated and excited to be the same group. We are better prepared than last year.”Shashank also spoke about accepting his role in the lower middle order and said it played a key role in his development.“It’s important to love the role. Earlier I also thought I was a top-order batsman and got knocked down the order. But then I fell in love with the role.”“The most important thing to be successful in this role is to get the support (of the team management and the dressing room) because you need freedom to play high-risk cricket.”Reflecting on his preparations, the 34-year-old revealed that personal milestones will be put on the back burner this season.“During the IPL, it’s more of a mental game than a skill game. I didn’t do well last year because I had a lot of injuries and couldn’t play much competitive cricket.”“My biggest goal is to impress the team. The individual goal will be secondary because I want the team to win and I want a photo with the cup.”“I don’t really like hitting the nets and I prefer to bat in games because my role requires me to use my mind more than skills, to stay calm under pressure.”Shashank also acknowledged the added scrutiny of rookies like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya, both of whom impressed last season.“It won’t be difficult but the teams will be better prepared and there will be pressure to perform this year. We all know what the IPL is. They will be expected.”Drawing on his own experience, Shashank emphasized the importance of backing up a strong debut season.“Just like last year, for me I didn’t want to be a one-year wonder, a lot of the time we see that happen. Those who do well one season and the next become really important because every team plans for us and there’s pressure from fans, owners, franchises, pressure to perform to match the previous season,” he added.
