Public forum seeks to name Warangal airport after Rudrama Devi

A public forum organized by Pragna Bharati in Warangal unanimously passed a resolution recommending the name of the new airport in Warangal – Kakatiya Maharani Rudrama Devi Airport.

Historians, legal experts, academicians, doctors, lawyers and citizens attended the ‘Charcha Vedika’ on Wednesday where the resolution was passed. The organizers said that a formal memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Minister, the Governor and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy recently invited the public to suggest the name of the new airport at Mamnoor after the state government completed the required land acquisition and handed over the land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Vice President of Pragna Bharati, Telangana, Mamidi Giridhar, highlighted the bravery and administrative legacy of Kakatiya ruler Rudrama Devi and emphasized the need to associate her name with the airport.

Organizers said the proposed name will reflect Warangal’s historical association with the Kakatiya dynasty and complement the Kakatiya architectural motifs proposed for the airport terminal.

The resolution cites Rudrama Devi’s military leadership, administrative reforms, irrigation systems, promotion of trade and emphasis on public welfare as the main reasons for the recommendation. It particularly highlighted the Kakatiya-era chain irrigation system and the ‘Abhaya Sasana’ associated with the Motupalli port as examples of the dynasty’s approach to water management and trade.

The event was attended by Prof. V. Somasekhar of NIT-Warangal, Former Chairman, Indian Council of Historical Research, Prof. Y. Sudarshan Rao, Prof. L. Ram Gopal Reddy, former faculty member of NIT-Warangal and convener of Pragna Bharati, Warangal.

State Joint Secretary Pragna Bharati Chamarthi Prabhakar Rao, Boora Ramesh, Prof. were also present. Prabhakar Reddy and other members of the organization.
