According to parents, school authorities on 30 May announced a decision to interrupt the English division of the school in this academic year and asked parents to move students to the Malaysian medium or to another school. From tribal settlements
Parents said that a sudden step would seriously affect higher students’ studies. “Many students come from tribal settlements and studied in class VIII in the English medium,” the parent said. The protesters claimed that during the protest the teacher said that students at school were not sufficiently proficient in the language to continue education in the English medium.
Deputy Director of Education (DDE), Idukki district, Geetha PC, said she ordered teachers at school to ensure that nine English medium students would continue their studies. “The ratio of the teacher to class VIII is 1:36 and we could allocate three divisions. The ratio of students of the IX and X classes remains fixed at 1:45.
