Mumbai Indians (MI) find themselves in uncharted territory, languishing in ninth place in the IPL 2026 standings after a series of demoralizing defeats. Following their latest seven-wicket drubbing at the hands of table-toppers Punjab on Friday, April 17, veteran Ravichandran Ashwin offered a compelling theory for the powerhouse franchise’s sudden decline: a massive T20 World Cup hangover.

Ashwin suggested on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat that the mental and physical toll India’s recent victory in the T20 World Cup catching up with the MI star core. With the franchise having lost four of its first five games, the “big name fatigue” factor is becoming impossible to ignore.
Ashwin warns of MI stars burning out in World Cup
The current Mumbai Indians team relies heavily on the same Indian core that recently experienced supreme glory on the world stage. Ashwin reckons the transition from the high-intensity environment of the World Cup to the relentless grind of the IPL has left the likes of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav running on empty.
Ashwin Reveals Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy:
Mumbai Indian didn’t even feel like trying to defend the score, first over Deepak Chahar went for 21 runs but then Jasprit Bumrah and Allah Ghazanfar covered but still in the 9th over Hardik brought back pic.twitter.com/7KHyqKuYvA— TEJASH (@Tejashyyyyy) April 17, 2026
“Now I feel the fatigue after the T20 World Cup… could take a toll on Mumbai Indians,” Ashwin noted. “They were outplayed before but now it looks like they have no answers with the ball. While the legendary Rohit Sharma remains the mainstay of the batting line-up even after his T20I retirement, his veteran presence has not been enough to mask the struggles of a bowling unit that Ashwin describes as lost for answers.
Hardik Pandya hints at ‘tough challenges’
The tactical vacuum was on full display at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite a spectacular unbeaten 112 off 60 balls from Quinton de Kock that powered Mumbai to a competitive 195/6, the defense was non-existent. Led by an unbeaten 80 from Prabhsimran Singh and 66 from Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings relentlessly chased down the target in just 16.3 overs.
A dejected Hardik Pandya admitted after the match that the team is at a breaking point. “To be very honest, I don’t have much to say right now,” Pandya said. “We have to see if we need to make some tough calls or if we have to go ahead and hope to turn things around. Those are some tough questions that we have to answer at the end of the day.”
With the Punjab Kings sitting on top of the table with an unbeaten run, Mumbai Indians are facing a race against time to rejuvenate the squad who looks physically exhausted. Whether it’s tactical moves or resting tired stars, the five-time champions need to find a second lease of life before their IPL 2026 campaign fizzles out completely.
