PNGRB-EESL Memorandum of Understanding for PNG Smart Metering
A Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) recently is set to provide a significant technological boost to India’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector through large-scale deployment of smart domestic piped natural gas meters, an official release said here on Sunday (September 6, 2026).
The initiative is expected to usher in a new generation of gas metering with advanced features including digital monitoring, tamper alerts, leak detection, remote operations and cyber security measures, making PNG’s ecosystem not only more efficient and transparent, but also safer and more secure for millions of consumers.
The partnership brings together PNGRB’s expertise in regulation and EESL’s experience in demand aggregation and large-scale smart metering programmes. With PNG connectivity rapidly expanding in urban and semi-urban areas, traditional systems of manual meter reading and periodic billing could face increasing challenges related to accuracy, revenue assurance and security monitoring and customer service.
This initiative is expected to benefit the stakeholders of all states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
