Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the Congress on Wednesday (Oct 28, 2026) pointing out that the main opposition party did not win a single seat in the Legislative Council (MLC) elections held using ballots in four major states.
“MLC elections in 28 seats in four big states – Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka. Elections were held on ballots. Guess how many seats Congress won?” said Mr. Modi on X.
At the time of reporting, results for eight seats have been declared in Uttar Pradesh. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five seats, the Samajwadi Party won three. In Bihar, the BJP-led NDA alliance came close to winning four seats. The Jan Suraaj Party opened its account with one seat, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also secured one seat and the Independents won two. In Karnataka, the BJP-JD(S) alliance swept all four seats. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra has not declared the results for the five MLC constituencies.
‘Storm of Lies’
Earlier in a press conference, MP and BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that the results of the MLC elections showed a lack of public support for the Congress party and that its methods were not working. He said the ambitions of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the Congress to “spread anarchy by creating a vortex of lies” appeared to be thwarted by the results.

“The most important aspect of these elections is that they were conducted through ballot papers and ballot boxes… This clearly shows that the Congress party lacks the ability to secure the support of the public or the concerned electorate in any kind of election, be it through EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) or through ballot papers and ballot boxes,” he said.
“The Congress party should understand that after spending almost two weeks sightseeing and enjoying themselves, Rahul Gandhi is now back in all his pomp and glory and talking about starting a movement to create problems for the Indian economy. He should understand that neither the public nor the MLAs are with him,” Mr Trivedi said.
He said that while BJP president Nitin Nabin was on a tour of Uttar Pradesh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah was in Punjab, Mr Gandhi was “touring Vietnam”. The problem lies neither in EVMs nor voter lists or ballot papers, but “delusions rooted in their minds and their (Congress’) habit of not working”, Mr Trivedi said.
On the Keralam Congress’s unconditional apology to the Supreme Court, he described his now-deleted social media post on X about the Chief Justice of India as “highly inappropriate, shameful and vulgar”.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s post, Congress leader Pawan Khera said that Mr. Modi should show his confidence in the electoral prowess of the BJP by pledging to hold all future Lok Sabha and Assembly elections by ballot, suspend the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of electoral rolls, restore 13.3 million deleted voters and remove the President’s lifetime electoral immunity.
“Until Modi acts on these demands, his claims are nothing but rubbish – empty words that no one can take seriously,” Mr Khera said.
