A cancer awareness campaign has been launched in Mumbai, sparking intense public scrutiny after a video showing a desperate commuter begging with folded arms to get through a traffic jam caused by the event went viral.
The rally organized by the Queens’ Drive Club had Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ wife Amruta Fadnavis as the chief guest who flagged off an all-women convoy of luxury cars.
The controversy erupted just as the flag hoisting ceremony was taking place.

A visibly shaken woman broke through the media scrum and stepped in front of the flashing cameras. She clasped her hands in despair and wept as she pleaded with event coordinators and security personnel to allow her vehicle to exit the bottleneck.
“Guys, I have an emergency at home,” she shouted as bystanders looked on. “My car is stuck. Please let me go… please let me through!”
When people at the venue reportedly asked her to vacate the venue so that the event could continue undisturbed, the commuter became increasingly agitated.
“No, please… I’m sorry. I’m begging you with folded hands, just give way to my car. You don’t understand, I need to get out of here,” she shouted, adding that she’d already been stuck for over an hour and a half due to route diversions.
Security officers eventually escorted the woman away from the main platform.

The incident, recorded by spectators and journalists, quickly spread on social networks and reignited a fierce debate about the mismanagement of urban infrastructure and the persistence of VIP culture in major metropolitan centers.
Netizens criticized local authorities and event managers for paralyzing key thoroughfares for the promotional spectacle at the expense of ordinary citizens.
Several users also criticized Amrut Fadnavis for not intervening during a public display of distress and questioned why someone was denied priority clearance citing a critical health crisis.
“He’s laughing,” commented user Amruta. Another wrote that traffic is always blocked in VIP movement. “Whether one lives or dies, it does not matter to the leader or the officer.”
Neither event organizers nor local traffic police have issued a formal statement on whether dedicated emergency lanes were maintained during the road closure.
The incident adds to a long list of complaints raised by urban commuters across India about the disruption to daily life caused by elite and political functions.
Amruta Fadnavis criticizes Rahul Gandhi
At the event, ironically, Amruta Fadnavis suggested that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi should raise people’s issues rather than constantly criticizing the government.
“If the government is doing a good job, it is not right to make unnecessary comments. It will be better if the opposition raises the right issues and plays its role positively,” she said.
