The Minister of the Union for G. Kishan Reddy (1 May 2025) stated that the 1948 census Act will be changed to allow the caste in the next census exercise.
In an interview with the Hinduist, the Minister stated that the census would be carried out in 2026 to comply with the Sabha and State Assembly, which is a constitutional requirement.
Pursuant to the 84th of the 2001 Constitutional Amendment Act, the overwork of the boundaries of constitutional districts is to be carried out on the basis of data on the population of the first census after the census in 1971.
The Minister, when he asked about the timing of the announcement, especially a week after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, said: “The population census will happen next year, but the preparation must start now, the foundations must be made.
Discussions to take place
Mr. Reddy, who is a member of the Cabinet Committee for Political Affairs (CCPA), who decided on Wednesday, said that the procedure for recording caste will be completed, among other things, after detailed discussions with caste organizations, public representatives and public intellectuals.
“The names of the caste provided by people will also have to be taken into account. … there will be detailed instructions. Yesterday, the basic decision was taken that the census should name the caste,” the minister said. He added that the bill is likely to be submitted during the monsoon meeting of parliament.
He said that the caste details of the Muslim community will also be recorded in the census.
It responds to the question of why the census has been carried out in 2021, detained for years, Reddy said, “Election districts will be re -organized in the coming days. This is a constitutional request and demands that it happens later.”
Casts, other than planned tribes and planned castes, were not listed in independent India.
The census, usually carried out every 10 years, was last held in the country in 2011. The entire exercise generally lasting 11 months is performed in two phases – home extract and housing schedule and a list of population. It starts on April 1 and closes on 28 February.
This is not the first time that the BJP government after it came to power in 2014, she announced plans for the number of caste.
August 31, 2018, the Ministry of the Interior (MHA) announced that the CSC data would be collected for the first time during the next census exercise. In his press release entitled “Preparation of the Minister of the Interior Union Home Reviews of the Census 2021” said: “It is assumed that it is for the first time gathering data on the Civil Procedure.”
Since then there has been no further action. When the Hindus submitted an application under the Law on Information (RTI), the Office of the Secretary General of India (RGI) stated that the negotiations and files that record on this decision were not available with his office.
