Peechi dam in Thrissur will open four spillways on August 31

Peechi Dam will open all four of its spillway gates on Monday morning (August 31, 2026) as water levels in the reservoir continue to rise following rains in its catchments.

The shutters will be raised two inches (5 cm) each at 11 a.m. Monday. At 2 p.m., they will be raised another two inches, making the total opening four inches (10 cm).

With the consent of the district collector, it was decided to regulate the rising water level in the reservoir. Water will also be released into the Manali river through KSEB’s small power plant to generate electricity.

Officials said more rainfall is expected in the coming days under the influence of a low pressure system, cyclonic circulation and monsoon, making it necessary to regulate the reservoir level.

The District Collector warned residents along the Manali and Karuvannur rivers to remain vigilant as the water level in the rivers could rise up to 30 cm from the current level after the release of water from the dam.
