AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday criticized the DMK government over the Supreme Court’s observations on the Mekedatu project.
The Supreme Court termed Tamil Nadu’s petition challenging Karnataka’s proposal to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedat as “premature” and refused to entertain it. If the detailed project report (DPR) is approved, the affected parties, including Tamil Nadu, could take action in accordance with the law.
In a post on X, Mr Palaniswami said the Supreme Court’s observation was shocking and disappointing. He alleged that the DMK government led by MK Stalin did not present strong arguments against the project. “Those in the DMK are only interested in protecting their business interests in Karnataka,” alleged Mr. Palaniswami. He urged the DMK government to take appropriate measures to enforce the state’s rights.
In a separate statement, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said the Supreme Court’s observation created an opportunity for the Center to review the DPR for the project. The DMK did not put forward suitable arguments and suffered a major defeat in terms of protecting the state’s rights over the Cauvery, he said. “The Supreme Court verdict is dangerous and favorable to Karnataka,” said Dr. Anbuman.
According to him, the DMK government should file a review petition, present strong arguments and protect the state’s rights.
