Doctors and faculty members of the Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College organized various activities including song and dance performances to educate the public about healthy eating habits on the occasion of World Obesity Day at Prakasam Bhavan, Ongola on Wednesday.
A public rally was organized at Gandhi Road to spread awareness about obesity and its health consequences. A street performance was performed to convey the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle while health education was conducted for the general public.
A free Body Mass Index (BMI) screening and waist circumference measurement was carried out at the station. A health education skit was performed, drawing attention to the dangers of obesity and practical preventive measures. Street games, health talks and dance performances were conducted to highlight the importance of lifestyle modification in obesity prevention.
The team highlighted that obesity is a major risk factor for serious health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD) and other non-communicable diseases. Doctors suggested preventive measures such as brisk walking for 30 minutes a day, a stress-free lifestyle, avoiding junk food and foods high in sugar, and maintaining healthy sleep.
The department also promoted a Wellness Clinic at Room No. 222 of the State General Hospital where preventive and curative services for civilization diseases are available. Local people were asked to use the services for regular screening, counseling and treatment for obesity and related conditions.
