Old Delhi Chawri Bazaar building collapse: Unauthorized construction, 2 MCD officials suspended | Top updates | Today’s news
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday suspended two lower-level engineers after an under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar, killing two people and injuring four.
In separate orders, the deputy commissioner of the Old Delhi zone also suspended two officials for “gross negligence in the discharge of their duties”.
According to news agency ANI, the order reads: “In view of the recent incident and developments arising therefrom and in view of a prima facie case of gross negligence, we hereby suspend you with immediate effect pending further investigation.”
- A senior MCD official said the under-construction building, which stood on a 50 square meter plot, had no approved building plan, making its construction unauthorized. The official further said that the civic body has not received any complaints regarding the construction of the building.
- The official further said that the construction work on the building was stopped around 15 days ago. Workers were removing the support system under the roof when the structure collapsed. “The material used was not designed and was not set properly, which ultimately led to the collapse,” the official said.
- Residents reported hearing a deafening noise as the three-story structure collapsed. One of the locals recalled that the building collapsed around 9:35 am. He immediately rushed to the spot after hearing the sound, but found the entire building lying in a heap of rubble.
- “My family members were trapped behind the building but they are fine. Two people were pulled out. One was badly injured and bleeding profusely, while another body was brought out wrapped,” he said. “The owners are four members, they are brothers,” he added.
