The Supreme Court on Friday (May 8, 2026) took cognizance of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA)’s statement regarding a video footage showing an Andhra Pradesh High Court judge sending a young advocate to one-day judicial custody for a procedural error.
The court’s official website showed the case tentatively scheduled for hearing on May 15.
In a resolution passed on May 6, the SCBA called on Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to investigate the incident while expressing shock at the judge’s conduct.
The SCBA resolution issued by its president Vikas Singh emphasized that judicial strength can best be demonstrated through patience rather than fear, especially when dealing with young advocates who were new to the profession.
“The SCBA expresses its deep concern and shock over the reported incident on May 5, 2026, before the Andhra Pradesh High Court, where a young advocate was allegedly ordered to be remanded in judicial custody for 24 hours during the trial before Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao,” the SCBA resolution said.
The Bar Council of India (BCI), the statutory body of lawyers, has also sought the Chief Justice’s urgent intervention in the same matter.
In a formal representation, the BCI said that despite the defense counsel “repeatedly seeking mercy and grace” and claiming he was in physical pain, the judge remained “unmoved”.
