Noida News: 2 die as massive fire engulfs Sector 66 residential building; about 50 families evacuated | Today’s news

Two people died on Wednesday after a fire broke out in a four-storey residential building in Noida’s Mamura in Sector 66, with police suspecting that the fire may have been started by a spark from a charging electric vehicle (EV) battery. The incident triggered a large-scale rescue operation, during which about 50 families were evacuated from the building, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the police, the fire broke out on the ground floor of the G+4 building located in lane 2 of Mamura village. Officials said the electric vehicle’s battery was charging when it allegedly sparked and ignited nearby gasoline-powered vehicles parked inside the building.

The fire spread quickly, filling the premises with thick smoke and causing panic among the residents.

Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control before a large-scale evacuation was carried out. All residents were safely evacuated from the building, officials said.

However, two people who suffered severe smoke inhalation during the fire were taken to the district hospital.

“Nearly 50 families lived in the building. All residents were safely evacuated during the rescue operation. However, two people whose health condition worsened due to smoke inhalation were taken to the district hospital, where a man and a woman were pronounced dead by doctors,” the police said in a statement.

Police said a case has been registered against the building owner or tenant under the relevant provisions of the Act. The accused was taken into custody, further court proceedings are underway.

Officials added that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was caused by sparks from the battery of an electric car being charged on the ground floor. The exact cause will only be determined by a detailed investigation,” said the police.

Authorities are also investigating whether the residential building met mandatory fire regulations and whether any non-compliance with safety measures contributed to the loss of life.

The investigation is expected to determine whether fire safety violations or other negligence played a role in the incident.
