(Bloomberg) — New Jersey Transit and the Long Island Rail Road have disrupted service to and from New York City on Friday as crews work to repair damage caused by a fire on the tracks near Penn Station that occurred Thursday.
NJ Transit warned commuters that direct midtown train service is being diverted through Hoboken until the end of the day Friday. Commuter rail tickets and passes are cross-honored by NJ Transit and private bus operators, as well as several stations along the Port Authority of New York and PATH trains in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, the LIRR was operating with “extremely limited service” at Penn Station and none eastbound from the station, according to a post on Friday X morning. During the evening rush hour, most Penn Station trains will be rerouted, according to a social media post.
The agency is warning customers of delays and cancellations to their commutes and urging riders to pay attention to overhead messages.
Service changes after Thursday’s track fire snarled the Manhattan commute. Both NJ Transit and LIRR service alerts said Amtrak crews were continuing to make repairs following the incident.
The disruption comes as LIRR workers prepare to strike this weekend after unions and state officials failed to reach an agreement on pay raises for this year. That would cripple the nation’s largest commuter rail line and leave tens of thousands of riders looking for other ways to get around Long Island and into New York.
