
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won three of the seven assembly seats held in the April 9 election, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI) website.
BJP secured victory in Umreth seat in Gujarat, Koridang seat in Nagaland and Dharmanagar seat in Tripura. Apart from these two Assembly seats, each has witnessed by-elections in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sunetra Pawar is leading in Baramati by a comfortable margin; while BJP candidate Akshay Kardile is leading in Rahuri.
Meanwhile, in Karnataka, the Congress has secured victory in one seat and is leading in another.
Let’s take a quick look at what happened in the by-election results:
Maharashtra
Sunetra Pawar got more than 1.1 million votes at the end of the 13th round of counting on Monday, while 21 of the other 22 little-known candidates have so far failed to even cross the 200-vote mark. No major political party fielded candidates against her. She took part in her first council elections, which recorded a turnout of 58.27%
In a contribution to Xon Monday appealed to the NCP workers and its supporters not to hold victory processions or celebrate with ‘gulal’ after the announcement of the result.
Baramati became vacant after the death of then deputy CM and NCP president Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28, prompting a by-poll. The NCP is part of the ruling Mahayuti along with the BJP and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena.
After the death of her husband, Sunetra Pawar replaced him as Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahayuti alliance government on 31 January.
According to constitutional provisions, she will have to become a member of one of the two chambers of the state legislature – the Diet or the Council – within six months of taking the oath.
The Rahuri the Ahilyanagar district seat fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile in October last year.
His son and BJP candidate Akshay Kardile was leading his nearest rival NCP (SP) candidate Govind Mokat by more than one million votes after all 27 rounds of counting.
Karnataka
Congress candidate Umesh Meti won Bagalkot Karnataka assembly seat with a lead of more than 22,000 votes, according to the Election Commission website.
Meanwhile, Congress’ Samarth Mallikarjun is leading by around 5,000 votes. Davanagere South mounting seat.
The polls were prompted by the death of senior Congress MLAs HY Meti (Bagalkot) and Shamanur Shivashankarappa (Davanagere South).
Gujarat
BJP candidate Harshadbhai Parmar won I will die place with a comfortable lead of more than 30,000 votes.
The by-election to the Umreth Assembly seat in Gujarat was necessitated after the death of the then sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar.
The by-election held on 23 April saw 59.04% of the vote, with six candidates in the fray.
Nagaland
BJP candidate Daochier I Imchen won the by-poll Corriding representative district by a slight margin of over 3,100 votes.
The poll had necessitated the demise of incumbent BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen in November last year. Held on April 9, it witnessed a strong voter turnout of 82.21%.
Six candidates are vying for the seat, including BJP candidate Daochier I Imchen, who is also the consensus candidate of the Naga People’s Front (NPF)-led People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government, Congress candidate T Chalukumba Ao, NPP’s I Abenjang and independents Imchatoba Imshikaba Imshikaba Imchatoba Imshikaba, Imchatoba.
Tripura
BJP candidate Jahar Chakrabortu won the by-election Dharmanagar Assembly constituency with a margin of more than 18,000 votes.
The counting of votes for the Dharmanagar bypoll began amid tight security on May 4.
The ban under Section 163 of the BNS came into force at 6 am within 100 meters of the counting hall to avoid law and order problems, said Returning Officer (RO) Debjani Choudhury.
