Nirmala Sitharaman, Rahul Gandhi clash over Tata Group leadership dispute
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi clashed on Wednesday (Oct 28, 2026) over the leadership row at Tata Sons, with Mr Gandhi questioning why Union Home Minister Amit Shah hosted representatives of Tata Trusts and Tata Sons at his residence.
The Finance Minister returned to Mr. Gandhi’s charge of criminal destruction, accusing him of politicizing business and legal matters and of “baseless slurs.”
The Leader of the Opposition responded by asking what “business and legal matter” required the meeting of Tata Trusts and Tata Sons held at Mr Shah’s residence.
“Dear Ms. Sitarama (sic), what ‘legal and business matter’ required Tata Trusts and Tata Sons to be hosted at Amit Shah’s residence? When will friend #1 appear in the game and what pieces will Tata get?” Mr. Gandhi said in a post on X, adding, “Finally, all Indian businesses except 3-4 of your friends hate you all and need no prodding.”
Mr. Gandhi’s post followed an earlier rejection by the finance minister.
“Being LoP @RahulGandhi, I suggest you refrain from politicizing every issue. Even casually labeling business and legal matters as criminal is unacceptable,” Ms Sitharaman said in a post on X, responding to Mr Gandhi’s earlier remarks on the Tata Group leadership tussle.
“You have repeatedly criticized the achievements of Indian industry and our entrepreneurs. Now you are trying to incite our business leaders to join you in spreading mistrust and toxicity?” said the minister.
Mr Gandhi had earlier questioned the “silence” of Indian businessmen over the bitter management row at Tata Sons, the holding company of the country’s biggest conglomerate.
“Tata is being criminally destroyed and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you be silent? Until they own you? Indian business is not Modi and Shah’s toy,” Mr Gandhi said, adding: “You lack courage. We don’t. We will ensure justice for these crimes.”
As LoP @RahulGandhi I suggest you refrain from politicizing every issue. Informal labeling of business and legal matters as criminal is also unacceptable. You have repeatedly criticized the achievements of Indian industry and our entrepreneurs. Are you now trying to incite our business leaders to join you in spreading mistrust and toxicity? For decades, your party has stifled the spirit of Indian entrepreneurs under the suffocating “License-Quota Raj” and brought poverty to millions of Indians. On the other hand, our government led by PM @narendramodi values Indian industry as a job creator and driver of economic growth. Our policies have been tailored to enable business, support industry and encourage investment. Political parties, leaders, governments and institutions share an equal responsibility to support our industry, empower our farmers and secure the future of our youth. Therefore, it is essential to engage constructively rather than tossing unfounded assumptions to suit your narrow political motives. The Constitution of India ensures justice for all its citizens and our honorable courts are mandated to uphold it. History is witness to the shoddy manner in which you, your party and the Prime Ministers belonging to your party have degraded the Judiciary. So Rahul ji, don’t look at ghosts everywhere.

Mr Gandhi is the first senior politician to speak publicly on the row that has divided the trustees of the Tata Trusts and infiltrated the boardroom of Tata Sons.

Unlike other conglomerates, the Tata Trusts, a group of philanthropic entities, hold approximately 66% stake in Tata Sons, which oversees group companies including Tata Consultancy Services Limited, Tata Motors Limited, Tata Steel Limited and Titan Company Limited.
Earlier this week, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata challenged the resolution to reappoint N. Chandrasekaran as chairman of Tata Sons, which was approved at the September 17 board meeting.

At the heart of the dispute between the Tata Trusts and Tata Sons is the issue of the listing of Tata Sons on the stock exchanges. While Mr. Chandrasekaran is in favor of the listing, Mr. Noel Tata is against the move amid pressure from the Reserve Bank of India.
In her post, Ms. Sitharaman compared the record of the Congress in government with that of the Narendra Modi government and accused the former of stifling business through the “Licence-Quota Raj”.
“For decades, your party has stifled the spirit of Indian entrepreneurs under the stifling ‘Licence-Quota Raj’ and brought poverty to millions of Indians,” she said.
“On the other hand, our government led by PM @narendramodi values Indian industry as a job creator and driver of economic growth. Our policies have been tailored to enable business, support industry and encourage investment,” she added.
Political parties, leaders, governments and institutions had equal responsibility to support industry, empower farmers and secure the future of the youth, Ms. Sitharaman said. She called for constructive engagement rather than accusations of political motives.
“India’s constitution ensures justice for all its citizens and our honorable courts are mandated to uphold it,” the finance minister said, alleging that Mr Gandhi, his party and Congress prime ministers had humiliated the judiciary.
“So Rahul ji, don’t look at ghosts everywhere,” said Mrs. Sitharaman.
The Tata Group did not immediately respond to Mr Gandhi’s allegations.
