More than 150 pipes, which were to be used to lay underground water pipelines, were gutted after a fire broke out along the Sholinghur-Tiruttani road on Tuesday.
Police said it was around 5 a.m. when several residents noticed heavy smoke coming from the stretch. They tried to extinguish the fire, but it had already spread to the entire set of pipes.
They alerted the Sholinghur firefighters, who extinguished the fire on the spot.
However, the entire set of pipes, which had an estimated value of around ₹ 10 lakh, was completely gutted.
The case has been registered and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
