Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday (March 4, 2026) inaugurated the newly constructed Beypore Police Station and Medical College buildings through video conferencing. The projects were completed at a cost of ₹4 crore.
Public Works Minister PA Mohamed Riyas and Thottathil Raveendran, MLA presided over the inaugural functions. Senior police officers and representatives of the people were present.
Beypore Police Station started functioning from a rented building in 1990. It was later shifted to another rented building under Beypore Port in 1999. After two decades, in 2021 it was moved again to another rented building.
The new building with modern facilities was constructed with 22 cents handed over by the port department, according to a senior officer at the station. The new station has a space suitable for women and children and improved utility areas, he said.
The Medical College Police Station was also functioning from an old building with limited facilities. It was in 1968 that the station started operating from a temporary building on the medical school campus. It was later moved to another building near the medical school in 1975. The design of the new building was approved a few years ago in view of the increased staff strength and law and order obligations.
The Chief Minister also launched the construction of the state’s first rural jail at Puthuppanam near Vadakara in Kozhikode. It is expected to cost ₹18 crore to complete. In the first phase, ₹2.35 crore would be spent on the construction of the enclosure wall and main entrance of the three-storey correctional facility with facilities to accommodate 223 inmates and 150 prison staff.
