Days after Nepal tightened rules imposing customs duties on cross-border travelers from India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took note of the development, saying the duty was a result of a “previous provision” and would not affect families transporting “household goods”.
The statement from MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal came after protests began in Nepal’s border towns against customs duties that travelers found impractical. In mid-April, Nepal’s new government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah implemented the existing rule that makes it mandatory for travelers carrying goods worth more than one hundred Nepalese rupees (NPR) to pay customs duty on the goods.
