A CCTV clip has emerged showing a man running across a footbridge at Mumbai’s Malad railway station after a college teacher was stabbed to death on a crowded local train on Saturday, January 24, according to a Times of India report.
Within 12 hours of the incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested the accused, 27-year-old Omkar Eknath Shinde, a daily wage labourer.
What is the incident about?
According to police quoted in the report, Alok Kumar Singh, a 33-year-old professor at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, was assaulted after a minor altercation while alighting from a Borivali-bound local train at Malad station around 6 pm.
Investigators said the argument suddenly escalated and Shinde allegedly stabbed Singh with a sharp object at platform number 1, the report said.
The accused fled amid the rush to the station, leaving Singh bleeding on the platform. Singh collapsed on the platform and held his stomach to try to stop the bleeding, News18 reported.
Singh was taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali but doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
“CCTV footage showed a man panicking, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans and fleeing across the footbridge shortly after the attack. Based on the footage and witness statements, we have identified and tracked down the accused,” a GRP official told TOI.
Police noted that several passengers in the compartment of the train watched the altercation and attack. Their statements are documented as part of the investigation. CCTV footage from Malad station and earlier stations on the route is also being reviewed.
Shinde, working as a metal polisher, was arrested under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are also investigating the specific weapon used in the attack.
Singh lived in Malad East with his wife and taught mathematics and statistics at the junior college as of 2024. Colleagues called him calm and quiet, noting that the incident shocked the college community.
