
A three-day meeting of the India-UK Network on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) organized by SRM University-AP brought together researchers, scientists, clinicians, veterinarians and public health professionals from India and the UK to strengthen the partnership between the two countries on AMR, microbiome research and collaborative initiatives.
Experts from fields including microbiome metagenomics, AMR genomics, community and public health, pharma-nutraceuticals, phage engineering, social medicine, food microbiome and animal health engaged in constructive dialogue and highlighted cutting-edge projects and research initiatives at national and international levels.
The AMR Network panel discussed the need to expand AMR surveillance at the community level by integrating human, animal and environmental sampling, including livestock and wastewater. Members emphasized the importance of identifying interdisciplinary collaborators across India to generate nationally representative data and highlighted community-level AMR data gaps due to limited awareness and infrastructure. Funding opportunities from India and the UK to support this One Health collaborative AMR research were highlighted.
The participatory panel included Suparna Mitra and Mahua Das from University of Leeds, UK, Ashawni Kumar Takur and Saravanan Matheswaran (IIT-Kanpur), Somasri Dam (University of Burdwan, Kolkata) and S. Shobana (SRMIST, Chennai), Abilvahrajyoti Mayhoshcut Institute, B. Boshantamur (Cancer Institute, Chennai), Rajib Dasgupta (Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health, JNU), Asifa Qureshi. (CSIR), Krupali Patel (OP Jindal Global University), Manikandan Madheslu (Sri Krishna College of Arts and Sciences, Tamil Nadu), Jayaseelan Murugaiyan (SRM University-AP), Anand Kumar (NTR College of Veterinary sciences, Andhra Pradesh) and Prasun Goswami (SRM University-AP).
Vice Chancellor SRM University-AP Ch. Satish Kumar emphasized the need for community involvement and awareness and systematic data collection to effectively combat AMR and highlighted its close link with public health.
