‘More than 2 hours to travel 5 km’: Hyderabad man stuck in traffic jam after rain shares ordeal | Today’s news
Hyderabad’s traffic jam is making headlines after heavy rains lashed the city of Nizams, turning a 15-minute trip into a 5-km stretch for 2 hours and 20 minutes. Many motorists complained of traffic snarls as they tried to reach their destination on time, with adverse weather conditions.
From crawling traffic to long queues of vehicles, many battered social media users have shared their horrific and harrowing experience of traffic disruption. A user named Prasad Nimmakayala gave an insight into the extent of the congestion and wrote, “Today it took me 2hrs 20mins to drive 5km from Jubilee Hills checkpoint to IKEA. A very rare feat though. I hope I don’t break that record again.” He attached a video to the post, which gives a glimpse into the massive traffic jam.
After Tuesday’s intense rain, traffic moved at a snail’s pace. Although the showers lasted for less than an hour, they were enough to paralyze large parts of the Telangana capital. The regions most affected by the downpour included flyovers and junctions near IKEA, major technology parks, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Hitec City, Kondapur and the Financial District. Streets and roads were submerged and motorists had no choice but to wait in traffic.
Thousands of people were stranded for hours after bumper-to-bumper traffic stretched for miles. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 15.6 mm of rain fell in an hour.
The Hyderabad traffic police shared a video of an ambulance stuck on a waterlogged road and urged motorists to give priority to such emergency vehicles. Heavy waterlogging was reported at several places including Virinchi Hospital Road section of Road No. 12, PVNR Express Highway Point, Nalgonda X Road, Malakpet, Shaikpet Nala, Nayani Narasimha Reddy Steel Bridge, Chhata Bazar, Telugu Thalli Flyover, Masab Tank, Puranapul Graveyard, Cable Bridge, BRKha Maidan Bridge, BRKha Maipet among others.
Several other social media users posted videos of the dire traffic situation.
Another user shared the plight of extremely congested roads and said, “4 cm rain this season, city is on its knees. Unplanned growth + removal of FSI and concentration of companies west of Hyderabad. One acre of government land was recently sold for 240 crores in the same area.”
A third user documented the ordeal online, saying: “Hyderabad is already overwhelmed with massive traffic jams and today’s rains have wreaked havoc across the city. Gachibowli, Madhapur, Hi-tech City and the financial district known as the Corridor are the worst affected.”
