Monsoon advances to more states; IMD warns of heavy rain in south | Today’s news
New Delhi: Southwest Monsoon has advanced into parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana raising hopes of an early boost to kharif sowing. The meteorological office also warned of heavy rainfall in southern India and continued heat waves in the northwest.
The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 4, three days after its usual onset date of June 1.
“Conditions are favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon over some other parts of Central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu and Southwest Bay of Bengal, some other parts of West Central and Northwest Bay of Bengal, some parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, remaining 2 days of India and North Sikkim.” The Ministry (IMD) said this in a statement on Monday.
This development assumes significance as India receives 70% of its rainfall through the Southwest Monsoon. A favorable monsoon can help boost rural demand, lift consumption and boost overall economic growth.
The IMD also said that the Western Disturbance will bring light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers, gusty winds of 50-60 km/h and hail over parts of northwest India on June 11 and 12.
Despite the advance of monsoon, heat waves are likely to persist over isolated areas of Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till June 11. Hot and humid conditions are also expected over Odisha, Konkan and Goa and Tamil Nadu in the coming days.
The IMD said maximum temperatures in northwest India are likely to rise by 2-4°C till June 11 and then fall by 3-5°C. In central India, temperatures may rise by 2-3°C till June 11 and then moderate in a similar fashion.
On 7 June, maximum temperatures crossed 40 °C in parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, South Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat and Vidarbha.
Temperatures between 36 °C and 40 °C were reported in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Telangana, while above-normal night temperatures prevailed in large parts of north, west and east India, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
