Monsoon advances over central and northwest India | Today’s news
New Delhi: The Southwest Monsoon moved further across India on Friday covering other parts of Gujarat, remaining areas of Madhya Pradesh as favorable conditions continued to support its advance.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said conditions remain favorable for the monsoon to advance over more parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, remaining areas of Haryana and Punjab and other parts of Rajasthan over the next four to five days.
A low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to keep the monsoon active across central India during the next four to five days, bringing widespread rainfall and increasing the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy showers in several states.
The IMD has predicted isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and South Gujarat on July 6, while West Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall on July 4.
An active monsoon is expected to boost kharif sowing and other agricultural operations. However, the IMD warned that areas with extremely heavy rainfall may face localized flooding, waterlogging and traffic disruption in the coming days.
Rain activity is expected to intensify over northwest India during the forecast period. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad along with Uttarakhand are likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall from July 4 to July 9. Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness widespread rainfall between July 5 and 9.
The IMD has also predicted widespread rainfall in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab between July 6 and 8. East Rajasthan is likely to remain under widespread rainfall during July 4-9, while rainfall over Uttar Pradesh is expected to increase during the week.
Central India is expected to remain one of the most active monsoon areas for the next seven days. Chhattisgarh, East and West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha are likely to witness moderate to widespread rainfall during July 4-9.
East India is also expected to witness persistent monsoon activity with widespread rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jharkhand and Odisha for most of the forecast period. Bihar is also likely to see rain throughout the week.
Northeast Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to receive heavy rain till July 9, while Assam and Meghalaya are likely to receive more rainfall from July 7 onwards.
