Casemiro has backed Michael Carrick to become Manchester United manager on a permanent basis, saying the former midfielder has already shown he has all the qualities needed to succeed in one of football’s toughest jobs.
Carrick was appointed as interim manager until the end of the season after United parted ways with Ruben Amorim in January after a turbulent 14 months in charge. Since taking over, Carrick has overseen a dramatic revival in fortunes at Old Trafford, guiding the club to 10 wins in 14 games across competitions and reviving hopes of a strong finish to the campaign.
Under Carrick, United produced some of their best performances of the season, recording victories against rivals Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. The turnaround took the club to third place in the Premier League table and secured qualification for next season’s Champions League there are still three games left.
Casemiro, who has been one of the experienced voices in the United dressing room, said Carrick’s impact has been visible both tactically and mentally, adding that the former England international deserves time to build something bigger at the club.
“I think he is a guy who has already shown that he has very good qualities to be the coach of Manchester United,” Casemiro told ESPN Brazil.
“Obviously, the season is all year round. But he’s done an incredible job since he came in and I think as time goes on he’s got what it takes to be a great Manchester United manager.”
Carrick’s calm approach and understanding of the club’s culture has attracted praise from players and supporters alike since stepping into the role. After more than a decade at United as a player, Carrick remains one of the most respected figures of the club’s modern era, winning multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time under Sir Alex Ferguson.
His appointment initially came as a short-term solution following Amorim’s departure, but United’s resurgence under his leadership has prompted growing calls for the club’s hierarchy to hand him the job on a permanent basis. Carrick was also credited with improving the confidence of several players while restoring a sense of stability during a difficult season.
United’s strong run under Carrick changed the mood at Old Trafford after a disappointing first half of the campaign under Amori. The club struggled for consistency before the change of manager and dropped out of the title race, but Carrick’s arrival has reignited confidence in the squad.
With three league games remaining, United are third on 64 points and remain firmly in their bid to finish the season in the top four. They next go up against Sunderland on Saturday as Carrick looks set to continue his impressive run as interim boss.
While the club have yet to decide on a managerial position for next season, Casemiro’s public support is likely to add further weight to the growing support for Carrick to land the role permanently.
