Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are in all sorts of trouble and will not have much room for error when they lock horns in their IPL 2026 match on Monday, May 4 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams are languishing in the bottom two spots of the table and need something more than special to turn their campaigns around.
There’s absolutely nowhere for ME to hide, as another defeat would more or less end their campaign. No team in the history of the IPL has qualified for the playoffs with 12 points and that is exactly why the upcoming match is so important. On the other hand, even the Super Giants are not in a comfortable position, and with a net speed of -1.106, he also faces a tough task.
CAN LUCKNOW Bounce Back?
Having started their campaign with two wins in their first three matches, the Super Giants looked in pretty good form. But as the tournament progressed, they went from bad to worse. LSG, who have lost their last five games, are looking for inspiration to turn their fortunes around. While Mohsin Khan sparked a five-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku Singh’s heroics ensured that KKR had the last laugh in Lucknow.
Rishabh Pant’s struggles with the bat have not helped the Super Giants in the slightest. Mohammed Shami’s role against MI will be crucial given how demanding the conditions at the Wankhede can be for the bowlers, and this is where his wealth of experience can prove crucial. With MI not in the best form, LSG may see this as an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
WILL ROHIT SHARMA RETURN AGAINST LSG?
It has been quite a while since Rohit Sharma last played, was ruled out due to a hamstring injury sustained earlier in the tournament. In his absence, MI’s top order underwent several changes. With the team just one bad game away from elimination, MI will be desperate for Rohit to return to the top of the order and produce the kind of impact he has produced so often in the past.
If Rohit does indeed return, Will Jacks will almost certainly be the one to make way for him. High scores are important at the Wankhede and Rohit’s return would boost their batting significantly.
MI have struggled with the bat, with Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya yet to fire consistently. They faltered even in the death overs against CSK and overall the team was far from the best, so Rohit’s return is all the more important.
The fact that they have used as many as 23 players in the tournament so far shows how restless Mumbai have been in IPL 2026.
TIME FOR BUMRAH TO TALK
IPL 2026 has been a nightmare for Jasprit Bumrah. He did not take wickets regularly nor did he manage to keep the score. Just three wickets from nine games at an economy rate of 8.60 and an average of 94.66 is far from what you expect from a bowler of his calibre. At the Wankhede this season, Bumrah has struggled even more, taking only one wicket from five matches at an economy rate of 9.80.
However, he showed signs of returning to form against CSK where he dismissed Sanju Samson and finished with figures of 3-0-20-1. But everyone knows what Bumrah is capable of doing the very best. If MI need to rediscover this form, it needs to be now or their wait for a sixth IPL title could drag on even further.
WANKHEDE: PITCHING AND CONDITIONS
The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium has been excellent for the batsmen, with an average score of 217 from the five matches so far. The other day, SRH were chasing 244 against MI, which only underlined how difficult the conditions were for the bowlers in Mumbai. Batting first teams are likely to need a minimum of 230 to contend. Pursuit should therefore be the preferred option.
There is no chance of rain and we can expect a complete match in Mumbai on Monday. Skies will be clear, temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius. However, conditions will be wet so it is important that players stay well hydrated.
MI vs LSG: HEAD-TO-HEAD
Mumbai Indians have a poor record against Lucknow Super Giants, winning only two of their eight meetings. At the Wankhede, MI lost two of the three matches played against the Super Giants. However, in their last meeting, Mumbai defeated Lucknow by 54 runs.
