The META Platform stated on Tuesday that it had concluded an agreement with the constellation of energy that one of the usefulness reactors in Illinois would operate for 20 years, in the first such agreement a large technology company with a nuclear power plant.
Why is this important
Large technology companies seek to ensure electricity because US demand for energy has been rising for the first time in two decades on request of artificial intelligence and data centers.
The agreement will help maintain Clinton Clean Energy Center Open Constellation, which could have been forced to close after expires in 2027 zero emissions of the funded Illinois, which grants the benefits of energy production virtually without carbon emissions.
It depends on the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the Restoration of the Race License after the constellation last year registered for its recovery by 2047. The purchase of META will replace Illinois support and help with re -license and operation.
The agreement could serve as a model for large technology companies to support existing nuclear power plants, while planning to power data centers with new nuclear and other energy sources.
Constellation Energy shares increased by 5.7% to $ 330.93 in morning trading.
According to the numbers
The financial information on the agreement was not revealed, but such lengthy agreements on energy purchase tend to run more than billions of dollars.
The agreement also allows the constellation to expand Clinton, which has a capacity of 1,121 megawatts by 30 MW. The plant drives the equivalent of about 800,000 American houses.
Urvi Parekh, the leading of the global energy on the meta, said, “One of the things we hear very acute from the instruments is that they want to be sure that power plants will work today.”
Joe Dominguez, CEO of Contellation, said, “We definitely conduct interviews with other clients, not only in Illinois, but in fact all the country, enter and do what the meta has done, which basically gives us our backs to invest for re -licensing these assets and keep them working.”
Bobby Wendell, an official of the Unit of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, said that the agreement would provide for workers in the “stable working environment” plant.

Evercore ISI analyst Nicholas Amicucci considered the agreement “the first of many” following the recent executive orders of President Donald Trump, aimed at strengthening American nuclear capacity.
Great technological forces
Independent energy manufacturers, such as Constellation, announced last year some of the largest energy stores in American history, as AI data centers are expected to lead US electricity consumption and record maximums in 2025 and 2026.
Last year, the constellation announced that it concluded an agreement to restart the reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, which serves Microsoft data centers. The reactor that is preparing for restart requires different approval.
Vistra Corp and NRG Energy have also announced the main planned acquisitions in recent months.
