Five workers were afraid of the dead after the water from the Mahi River flooded the hydroelectric power plant near Lunawada in the Mahisagar district in Gujar on Thursday (September 4) in the afternoon, the police said on Friday (September 5, 2025).
There is a rescue operation with more agencies. The incident occurred around 3:00 pm in the Dontpura race, said the district superintendent of Safin Hasan Hindu.
He said that 15 workers were on the maintenance service inside a large well in the plant when the water was suddenly released from the Kadana dam upstream. The water plunged into the well and caught workers. “It is almost 60 feet deep and the water is still escaping into it. So pumping also does not help,” said Mr. Hasan.
“The staff of the national strength to disasters, SDRF and fire brigade staff from Vadodary and Mahisagar joined the rescue operation … We also involved local Lunawada swimmers,” he said.
According to Mr. Hasan on Thursday afternoon, the water from the Mahi River entered the race, and even after 24 hours there was no hint of five missing workers despite the rescue operations with more agencies.
“With the discharge from the Kadan dam upstream, the water suddenly plunged into the well, while the workers were inside and did maintenance. Ten of them managed to escape, but five were swept away,” he said.
The rescue teams started operations soon after the incident, but the missing workers have not yet been traced, Hasan said. “We brought an underwater search vehicle from Vadodary because the tank is deep and the visibility is extremely bad due to the presence of oil and grease in the water,” he added.
