The leader of the Trinamool Congress in Kanpur in the Hooghly district in West Bengal was unidentified by the invaders, said the police on Thursday (July 31, 2025).
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Kanaipur’s booth, when a group of men attacked him with sharp objects, said a higher officer.
The leader of the TMC was transported to the SSK Hospital in Calcutta, where he was declared dead, the police said.
“A member of the Trinamool Congress Panchayat Pint Chakraorta was penetrated by unidentified attackers in Kanaipur, while he was returning home on Wednesday evening.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers struck him several times before they escaped from the scene.
The locals took him to a nearby hospital, where he was dependent on Kolkata for better treatment.
The State Minister of Transport Snehasis Chakborty, who visited the hospital, said the deceased was close to him because they studied together.
“I can’t understand the reason for the murder, but I hope the police will soon arrest the culprits,” he said.
Opposition leaders argued that internal disputes in the Congress of Trinamool were the reason for the attack.
