The suicide of a 26-year-old doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara grabbed national headlines, with the state’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying the government would not spare anyone directly or indirectly involved in her death.
“A doctor who committed suicide and wrote such a letter on her hand shows the pain she went through. Yesterday we suspended the police officer concerned. We have started an investigation and no one will be spared. The opposition is politicizing it. Even if someone is directly or indirectly involved, they will not be spared,” Fadnavis said.
So far, one of the accused in the case, Praashant Bankar, has been arrested.
“Police have arrested Prashant Bankar, one of the two accused in the female doctor suicide case in Phaltan taluka. He will be produced in court today. The other accused, police sub-inspector Gopal Badne, is still absconding and a search is on to nab him,” Satara Superintendent of Police (SP) Tushar Doshi said, according to a report.
Earlier, speaking about the case, SP Doshi, according to ANI, said, “A doctor has committed suicide. A note with the names of two people, including a police official, was found on her palm. A case has been registered against them on charges of rape and abetment of suicide. The accused PSI has been suspended from duty. Our teams are trying to find the two accused. A thorough investigation will be conducted and strict measure.”
The woman left a suicide note written in pen on her left hand, in which she accused police officer Gopal Badane of raping her several times.
The banker who was arrested is a software engineer. The deceased lived to be a tenant of the Banker’s father.
The father of the deceased is asking for the death penalty for the accused
The father of the deceased doctor appealed for the death penalty for those responsible for her death.
Addressing Fadnavis directly, he said, according to an NDTV report, “My only demand is that the culprits should be punished by death by hanging. That’s it. There is nothing else. This is my demand.”
He also referred to the Mahabharata according to the report and said, “While the injustice was happening, everyone just stood and watched. Duryodhana and Dushasana were there, but not a single Krishna came to help my daughter. So for the sake of daughters in the future, at least one Krishna should come forward and protect her honor.”
