The Hyderabad Traffic Police has launched a special drive to check private buses plying out of the city with a renewed focus on passenger safety, vehicle fitness and pending challenges. In the hour-long inspection that took place on Friday evening, the cops checked about 150 to 200 buses and collected nearly ₹100,000 in pending fines.
AKT Traffic (West Zone) K. Hariprasad said such checks would now be conducted regularly at major departure points such as Maitrivanam, where several private transporters are starting inter-city bus services. “We ensure the presence of two drivers on long-haul routes and stop those who do not comply. We also verify the mechanical fitness of the vehicles and ensure that emergency tools such as jackhammers and exits are in working order,” he said.
Mr. Hariprasad added that drivers and conductors need to take a more active role in passenger safety, similar to what is done with airlines. “As with flights, bus operators also need to educate passengers about emergency doors and the use of hammers to break glass in the event of a fire or crash. Awareness can make a big difference in saving lives,” he said.
Vehicles found without valid driving licenses are reported to the Regional Transport Office for further action. The officer noted that the initiative follows recent incidents involving private buses, including an accident on the Kurnool Expressway, and that such surprise checks will continue to enforce higher safety standards and accountability of private operators.
