French President Emmanuel Macron addressed US President Donald Trump’s comments in South Korea on Thursday (April 2nd), in which he expressed displeasure that Trump mocked him and his wife.
“So I won’t respond to them – they don’t deserve a response,” Macron told reporters.
Trump mocks Macron and wife during Washington lunch
Trump appeared to mock Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during a private lunch in Washington on Wednesday. Among the guests were representatives of faith and government officials. The president also criticized NATO allies for not supporting a potential war against Iran.
Trump mocks French accent and marriage
During the lunch, Trump imitated a French accent while commenting on Macron’s marriage: “I’m calling France, Macron – whose wife is treating him extremely badly. He’s still recovering from his right jaw.”
He appeared to be referring to a May 2025 video showing Brigitte Macron lightly pressing her husband’s cheek as they exited a plane in Vietnam. Macron said at the time: “We were joking, as we often do,” denying any domestic dispute.
Criticism of NATO support
Trump also commented on France’s help on Iran: “We didn’t need it, but I asked anyway… And I said, Emmanuel, we’d like some help in the Persian Gulf, even though we’re setting records for taking out the bad guys and taking out ballistic missiles. We’d love to get some help. If you could, could you please send ships right away.”
He then attempted a French accent to quote Macron’s alleged response: “‘No, no, no, we can’t do that, Donald. We can do it when the war is won.’ I said, no, no, I don’t need after the war is won, Emmanuel.”
Trump concluded with a jab at NATO: “So I learned about NATO — NATO is not going to be there if we ever have the big one, you know what I mean by the big one.
