Just over 1.08 million candidates had filed their papers when the deadline for filing nomination papers for the 2025 local body elections closed at 3pm on Friday.
According to information released by the State Election Commission at 8 pm on Friday, 1,08,580 candidates filed 1,64,427 nomination papers. Of the total, 57,227 are female candidates, 51,352 are male and one – in Thiruvananthapuram district – is a transgender candidate.
The data is not final, the commission said.
Kerala goes to polls in two phases on December 9 and 11.
Malappuram recorded the highest number of candidates (13,595) who submitted their documents, followed by Thrissur (11,079), Palakkad (10,372) and Ernakulam (10,092). A total of 9,977 candidates filed their nominations in Kozhikode, 8,625 in Thiruvananthapuram and 8,238 in Kannur. The number of candidates in other districts are — Kasaragod (4,374), Wayanad (3,180), Idukki (4,257), Kottayam (6,276), Alappuzha (7,210), Pathanamthitta (4,164) and Kollam (7,141).
Document review will take place on Saturday. November 24 (Monday) is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Once these processes are over, the numbers will continue to decline.
The total number of nominations filed this year is lower than the number filed in the previous elections in 2020. About 1.7 million candidates filed their nominations for the 2020 polls. After examining the papers and the deadline for withdrawal, 74,899 candidates were in the fray. At the final count, there were 38,593 male candidates, 36,305 female candidates and one transgender person in the fray for the local body elections in the state, which were held in three phases on December 8, 10 and 14.
