LG announces ₹15,000 relief for Leh protest victims

Soon after a fresh round of talks between the Center and civil society amalgams in Ladakh, in yet another big reach, the Lt Governor’s administration on Sunday (September 13, 2026) announced a compensation of ₹ 15 lakh to the next of kin of those killed during street protests in September last year.

The administration also announced an ex-gratia of ₹ 3 lakh to those with serious injuries and ₹ 1 lakh for minor injuries.

“As part of our continued commitment to support the families affected by the tragic violence in Ladakh on September 24 last year, we have today approved a compensation of ₹ 15 crore to the next of kin of each of the four deceased,” LG Vinai Kumar Saxena said.

Ladakh civil society groups, including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), held talks with the Center on September 9. There is a growing rapprochement between the Center and the Ladakh groups that have been demanding compensation for the dead.

The LG said he was “deeply grateful to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his sensitive, humanitarian and leadership approach and for expressing solidarity with the victims and their families”.

He said that while no amount of compensation can replace the life lost or erase the pain experienced, the Ladakh administration stands firmly with each affected family on their journey to recovery and overcoming grief.

Four civilians were killed and about 90 injured after security personnel allegedly opened fire on protesters in Leh on September 24 last year.

The Center has already promised special provisions tailor-made for Ladakh under Article 371 to be granted to the region by the legislature.
