Leeds United have reportedly secured a pre-contract agreement with a promising teenage defender who is set to join the club this summer. The news comes amidst mixed fortunes for the Lilywhites following a disappointing weekend result.
Struijk Expresses Disappointment After Defensive Error in Pompey Defeat
Leeds’ lead at the Championship summit was significantly narrowed after they suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Daniel Farke’s side was punished for their inefficiency in front of goal. Colby Bishop capitalized on a defensive mix-up to score the decisive goal in the 61st minute.
This loss, coupled with Sheffield United’s 1-0 victory over Preston North End, saw Leeds’ lead at the top of the table reduced to goal difference alone.
Speaking to LUTV after the match, Leeds defender Pascal Struijk expressed his disappointment with the result. “We had a few chances and we didn’t score them,” he said. “Portsmouth are a good side, especially at home. Their home record in 2025 has been really strong, so we knew it would be a tough game. We’re just disappointed to come away with nothing.”
Struijk also emphasized the need to bounce back quickly, adding, “Games come thick and fast, so we have to turn it around quickly. We’ll try to keep the spirits high because there’s no time to dwell on this.”
Leeds Agree Pre-Contract for Nigerian Defender Ngenge
Amid the disappointment, there was positive news for Leeds United as they secured a pre-contract agreement with Nigerian defender Leonard Ngenge. According to All Soccer Nigeria, the 17-year-old will join the club in the summer once he turns 18.
Ngenge, who currently plays for Ikorodu City in the Nigeria Premier Football League, is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the league. Comfortable playing as a center-back or left-back, he has already made 18 appearances this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
Ikorodu’s sporting director, Wale Quadri, confirmed the deal, stating, “Ngenge has an existing pre-contract with Leeds United. He’s set to join the club in August. He was scouted in Nigeria and invited to Leeds for further training. This was his second visit to the club. Leeds are signing him as a player for the future, and they’re just waiting for him to turn 18.”
Ngenge’s potential was further highlighted when he was named in the Team of the Tournament for the 2024 ValueJet Cup. Ikorodu’s first-team analyst praised his performances, calling him “impressive” and adding, “What a player!”
