Kozhikode Corporation launched the Sakhee project (Social Action by Kozhikode Corporation for Health and Excellemenment Environment) under the common joint committee for health and well -being.
The project includes the distribution of menstrual cups to women throughout the city and supports better menstrual hygiene. At the same time, the aim is to reduce the not biologically distinguished waste by promoting a shift from sanitary napkins to the menstrual cups.
“The less the use of sanitary flakes, the lower the amount of waste,” said S. Jayasree, chairman of the Permanent Corporation Committee and indicated pollution caused by hygiene inserts.
The first step is the distribution of 60,000 menstrual cups among women in the city. “We plan to distribute them through Kudumbashree and Harith Karma Sena. The primary focus will focus on married women under 45 years of age. Others, however, can also take advantage of demand and interest. “To this end, we are also planning to start a campaign to raise awareness. Some women have to know about menstrual cups and their use. Class will be held in all departments,” said Jayasree.
Menstrual cups are used as ecological, pocket and healthy alternatives for sanitary inserts and swabs. These reusable cups are made of silicone in medical quality inserted into the body and offer women the level of comfort and freedom during menstruation, which sanitary inserts often do not. Cups come in three sizes, suitable for unmarried girls, women over thirty and those they gave birth.
Mr. Diwakaran said that the corporation had earned Crore 1.79 ₹ for the project. Mayor Been Philip started the project on Thursday.
