The SIT probing a possible terror link in the arson attack near a synagogue in Ernakulam market has found that the accused was allegedly involved in two similar incidents earlier this year, police sources said on Monday (Oct 19, 2026).

Police arrested Ebin Paul (32), a native of nearby Puthencruz, for allegedly setting fire to Blossom Nursery, located in front of the Kadavubhagam Synagogue in Ernakulam Market, under Kochi Central Police Station, in the early hours of October 12.

On Monday (October 19), Mr Paul was produced before the Ernakulam First Class Court and remanded in judicial custody after five days of police custody.

According to sources, investigations revealed that Paul first tried to set fire to a building at Mekkappad in Muvattupuzha in January and targeted the same place in March this year. The building that housed the office sustained minor damage, police said.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) suspects that video footage of the incident was sent to his attendants via telegram.

Later, Mr. Paul allegedly set fire to a car dealership in Muvattupuzha before an arson attack near a synagogue in Kochi, police said.

During the investigation, Mr. Paul was taken to all three locations and to his residence to collect evidence, officials said.

The investigation into the electronic devices used by Paul continues and investigators are trying to identify his alleged handlers, police said.

Based on the findings, fresh charges will be added to the case and the SIT will again seek his arrest, they added.

Meanwhile, the Puthencruz police, which registered a separate case after drugs including heroin, oxycodone, fentanyl, alprazolam and ketamine were seized from Mr Paul’s residence, will soon record his arrest and approach the court seeking his custody.

Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have already collected information from the police about the case, officials said.
