
During the first eight months of the year, a significant increase in the number of cases of registered and perpetrators arrested under the Act on Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances (NDPS) was reported compared to the previous year.
While in 2023 a total of 2,475 NDPS cases were registered within the Kochi police limits, according to official data, this year is 2,138.
In 2024, a total of 2,793 people were arrested in drug cases, while 2,372 were loaded until August 2025. The seizures were 44 in commercial quantities last year and 34 this year. The same trend is observed in small seizures: 1,699 in 2024 and 1,508 this year. Under the law of NDPS, up to 1 kg of Ganja is considered a small amount and 20 kg or more is classified as commercial quantity. For MDMA, up to 0.5 Gm are calculated as a small amount and 10 gm or more as commercial. The amount between small and commercial thresholds is classified as medium by the police.
Consumer cases were 610 last year, while according to offtial data, 500 reached 500.
This year, the police seized 325.46 kg of suspect Ganja, close to 331.51 kg seized until December last year. As for the suspicion that Ganja in the form of candies that Pedlers uses a lot of fear to target children, a total of 418 GM was confiscated in 2024 and 178.8 GM this year. In particular, the amount of suspicion of MDMA confiscated this year has already exceeded 2024 – 2.41 kg compared to 1.89 kg.
A significant increase was also observed in a seizure of suspicion of methamphetamine. While only 30,198 GM suspicious synthetic stimulants, known for their high dependent potential, were confiscated in 2024, the municipal police have already entertained 228.766 GM this year.
Other suspicious narcotic items in police data include hashish oil (1,546,37 gm in 2024 and 172.45 gm until August 2025), brown sugar (218 gm and 30.42 gm), LSD stamps (105 and 25) and Nitrazepam tablets (563 and 284). In particular, no seizures of items such as buprenorphine, diazepam injection, and ampoules of Promethazin hydrochloride have not been reported this year, unlike the previous year. These drugs should not be sold without a prescription.
The Commissioner of Narcotics Kochi City Ka Abdul Salam quoted the obvious influx of narcotic objects into the city and also increased police supervision, as reasons why this year the rise of cases and seizures. “We performed aggressive searches with four units of district anti-arotic special action forces. More than 35 police staff, including sub-insectors, are part of strength,” he said.
Exams in the vast majority of cases registered in recent years have to begin.
