In Haryana’s Jhajjar, ailing Ashok Kumar struggles to understand how his 27-year-old son, who left home in office clothes on Saturday morning, returned in a white shroud. “My son Vikas left for Rohini bus depot after packing his tiffin as usual. Who knew that would be the last time I would see him?” said Mr. Kumar.
According to police, a group of wedding goers assaulted a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus driver in Rohini Sector 20 at around 11 pm on December 6 following a dispute over the right of way on a congested one-way road during a wedding procession at Shiv Chowk.
Vikas’s colleague Umesh, who was on duty as a bus conductor at the time, said in his complaint that the dispute started after a private vehicle refused to give way to the bus. The car driver cursed at Vikas and then called his relatives. “They climbed out of the driver’s side door and dragged him out, kicking and punching him until his body became immobile,” it said.
A senior officer said bystander Suraj, who intervened to save the victim, was also attacked and sustained serious injuries.
“Vikas and Suraj were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. While Suraj’s treatment continued there, Vikas was referred to Safdarjung Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday,” DCP (Rohini) Rajeev Ranjan said.
Mr. Kumar said his son has completed his bachelor’s degree and wants to pursue further education through distance learning. “I don’t understand how someone can kill their fellow man over something so petty,” he said. Vikas has been working as a driver for the past two years and was earlier employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, his father said.
The DTC Karmachari Ekta union condemned the incident and blocked roads in the capital, demanding strict punishment for the culprits and compensation for the victim’s family.
Police have so far arrested one person, Rahul, nephew of the main accused. A search is on for the others, the officer said.
