The election result in Kollam district signals a major political realignment in the region, defined by the historic urban breakthrough of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the decisive weakening of the hegemony of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
The most significant event was the UDF ousting the LDF in Kollam Corporation, their first ever victory since its formation in 2000. This defeat was compounded by the loss of Karunagapally municipality to the UDF, which eventually secured a total of 32 grama panchayats, four block panchayats and one municipality in the entire district. While the LDF was able to retain control of the district panchayat and most of the rural bodies (7 out of 11 block panchayats and 33 gram panchayats), the rise of the UDF was undeniable, especially in the district panchayat where they increased their tally from three to 10 seats. The results confirm that the UDF has successfully made massive gains across the district and broken the LDF’s grip on Kollam’s political fabric. Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) made significant gains, especially in Kollam Corporation, winning a total of 12 seats – a significant jump from the six seats it had in 2020.
“This result reflects the anger of the electorate against the administration that destroyed the Kollam Corporation for 25 years, along with the public backlash against the Left government,” DCC president P. Rajendraprasad said. PC Vishnunath, MLA, expressed confidence that the historic victory in the corporation would be successfully replicated in the assembly elections across Kollam district.
CPI(M) district acting secretary S. Jayamohan said the LDF would seriously look into the corporation debacle. “The election results clearly indicate that UDF and BJP have formed an unholy alliance in many parts of the district to gain power. In Kollam Corporation, in 12 constituencies won by UDF, BJP got votes ranging from only 29 to 324. Similarly, in 7 constituencies won by BJP, UDF0 got less than 35 votes.
