Kathryn Bryce inspired Scotland to their first ever Women’s T20 World Cup victory
Kathryn Bryce inspired Scotland to their first ever Women’s World Cup T20 victory on Saturday 13 June as Scotland beat Ireland by 40 runs at Old Trafford in Manchester to kick off their campaign in style. Bryce previously captained Scotland to their first appearance at the tournament in 2024 and again played a central role in a landmark moment for her side almost two years later.
The Scotland captain shone with a brilliant all-round performance as he scored 60 off 39 balls before returning figures of 3.1-0-19-2. Fittingly, it was Bryce who sealed the win, dismissing Aimee Maguire to claim the last wicket of the match. Ireland, also chasing their first Women’s World T20 win, failed to break their duck as Scotland created history in Manchester.
THE BRYCE SISTERS MAKE HAY
After being asked to bat first, Scotland started steadily through Darcey Carter (14) and Katherine Fraser (15), but both batsmen departed in quick succession. The Bryce sisters, Kathryn and Sarah, then took control and put together a brilliant 106-run partnership for the third wicket to put Ireland firmly on the back foot.
Kathryn brought up her half-century in just 32 balls while Sarah narrowly missed the milestone. She made a smooth 49 off 35 deliveries before falling to Arlene Kelly. Kathryn, meanwhile, stayed at the crease until the penultimate over, ensuring Scotland maintained the momentum and finished strong in the death overs.
For Ireland, Ava Canning was the outstanding bowler with impressive figures of 4-0-27-3. Arlene Kelly and Aimee Maguire chipped in with a wicket each, while leg-spinner Cara Murray endured a difficult outing, conceding 27 runs from her two overs.
